Empress Maria Theresa of Austria (1717-1780) and her husband, Emperor Francis I of Austria (1708-1765), were one of the most powerful reigning couples in Europe during the second half of the 18th century. The eldest daughter of Emperor Charles VI, Maria Theresa became Empress of Austria in 1740. She had been married since 1736 to Francis III, Duke of Lorraine. After having to fight to establish Maria Theresa's authority on the throne, the couple controlled a large part of Europe thanks to the royal marriages they arranged for their numerous offspring. Of their sixteen children, ten reached adulthood; their daughters became Duchess of Parma and Queen of the Two Sicilies, and their youngest daughter, Marie Antoinette (1756-1793), became Queen of France upon marrying the Dauphin Louis in 1770.
