Description

[Torga, Miguel], pseudonym of Adolfo Rocha

Rampa. Poemas de Adolpho Rocha. Coimbra: Edições Presença, 1930

4to (265 x 200 mm). Uncut. Signed “Adolpho Rocha” to verso of blank following title page, signed silver gelatin photograph of author tipped onto verso of title page, title page in red and black, half-title with red printer’s device; occasional spots to the first few leaves, glue residue to verso of title page and following blank. Original printed wrappers; minor chipping and wear to wrappers at spine and edges.

First edition, presentation copy of Rampa to Álvaro Taveira, with a signed photograph.

Rampa is the second book by the famed Portuguese author and one of his earliest works published under his own name. This copy is inscribed to Rocha’s close friend and editor of Manifesto, one of the several literary reviews that Torga contributed to (see lot 328).

Torga's poetry reflected "the apprehensions, hopes, and anxieties of his time viewed from an individualistic—and ultimately religious—perspective, and that its rhythmic purity and originality, along with the organic coherence of its imagery." (Saraiva & Lopes)
