Ilustracion del renombre de Grande. Madrid: Francisco Martinez, 1638
4to (185 x 130 mm). Text within double-ruled borders, 2 engraved plates of Conde Duque de Olivares and Philip IV of Spain after Diego Velasquez engraved by Herman Paneels, 18 engraved half-length portraits at the beginning of eulogies II–XIX by Pedro Perete dated 1637, woodcut tailpieces and initials; leaf 87 incorrectly numbered 7, scattered foxing and marginal staining, with browning most significant to final leaves. Contemporary vellum, vertical manuscript labeling on spine; worn, lightly rubbed with minor tear at center, inner hinge nearly detached, lacking ties and front free endpapers, pastedown endpapers taken from text of another work.
First edition of eulogies on notable Spanish and French historical figures.
Dedicated to King Philip IV of Spain, Illustracion del Renombre de Grande memorialises various saints, such as St. Basil and St. Nicolas as well as rulers King Philip IV and Alexander the Great. The portraits of Philip IV and Conde Duque de Oliviares are executed by celebrated seventeenth-century Spanish engraver Herman Paneels after portraits by Diego Velasquez.
