Description

[Crowley, Aleister]

White Stains. The Literary Remains of George Archibald Bishop. A Neuropath of the Second Empire. [Amsterdam for London: Leonard Smithers,] 1898

4to (220 x 175 mm). Uncut and partially unopened. Signed "Crowley" in pencil to front endpaper, half title; one or two pencil marks, some browning to prelims. Original black boards, with title in upper corner, smooth spine with female gender symbol; boards with some bubbling and light wear with few stains and scratches, corners bumped, head and foot of spine bumped and worn, joint slightly cracked, dust soiling to top edges.

First edition of one of Crowley's rarest books, and an unnumbered copy out of a print run of just 100.

Published under the pseudonym "George Archibald Bishop," White Stains is a lyrical exploration of every conceivable sexual taboo, many copies of which were destroyed by British Customs in 1924.

A characteristically Crowleian celebration of obscenity.
