Description
Rouault, Georges, and Ambroise Vollard
Réincarnations du Père Ubu. Paris: Ambroise Vollard, 1932
Folio (438 x 327 mm). Limited edition, copy 277 of 305, with 104 wood-engraved illustrations in text, a wood-engraved plate marked “planche d’essai” in pencil, and 3 (of 22) engraved and aquatint plates at rear; contents generally clean and bright with a few minor instances of pale spotting and soiling, the plates with a few marginal tears, one small loss at a corner, light toning, and remnants of adhesives on versos. Loose in original pictorial wrapper and glassine, as issued; wrappers reinforced with modern card boards, the glassine largely present but with some expected chipping and creasing at extremities. Gray paper slipcase; defective.
Vollard's expansion of Alfred Jarry's Père Ubu chronicle, with illustrations by Rouault.
"Rouault was fifteen years in completing these plates, which he began in 1916. It has been shown that his original gouache sketches were transferred by photography to the copperplate, which the artist then worked over with etching, aquatint, and drypoint to attain the dark and heavy texture" (The Artist and the Book).
