Luis Blanc, a French republican from Santo Domingo, fought in Miranda's army in Venezuela at the end of 1812, then in Cartagena in 1813–1814, a period during which he may have had the opportunity to meet Chassériau. Blanc was one of 22 French citizens, out of 155 foreigners, naturalized in Colombia between 1823 and 1825.
