Description

Alcedo Y Herrera, Dionysio

Compendio Historico de la Provinica, Partidos, Ciuade, Astilleros, Rios Y Puerto de Guayaquil en las Costas de la mar del sur. Madrid: Manuel Ferandez, 1741

4to (202 x 155 mm). Engraved folding map depicting Guayaquil, woodcut initials, headpieces, and tailpieces; subtle offsetting of map onto A1r, slight foxing and scattered dampstaining throughout. Full late twentieth-century antique burgundy morocco boards most likely by Império da Conceição Graça, richly gilt and tooled in blind, inner dentelles gilt, edges gilt, marbled endpapers; slight wear to joint.

First edition of the earliest topographical and historical study of Ecuadorian province.

The present lot is a general introduction and account of the architecture, trade, and wildlife of the port city of the province Santiago de Guayaquil. Established in 1537 by Francisco Orellana, the city of Guayaquil is depicted within the folding map engraved by Paul Minguet, marking the old and new town and other points of interest.

Thirty five years prior to Compendio's publication, Alcedo Y Herrera would travel to the Americas and become a trusted source on colonial affairs, having served in various administrative posts in Mexico, Peru, and Ecuador.
