Description

cartouche-shaped, the lid elaborately chased with rocailles, shells and scrollwork in high relief on a matted ground, the waisted sides with a slender thumbpiece and a chased shell below, polished gold base, reeded mounts, the interior of the lid mounted with a portrait miniature of two elderlies around a small treasure trunk, painted on paper, apparently unmarked,

with a handwritten paper note explaining some of the provenance, reading: ‘Fürstbischoff Dalberg meinem Grossvater von Chrisma geschenkt, mir im März 1878 als Erbe meines l. Vaters geworden‘

8 cm, 3 1/8 in, wide; overall weight 143 grams, 4.5 oz.
