Collection of the Rochechouart de Mortemart Family
Mathieu Criaerd, cabinetmaker, received master in 1738.
Based on Rue Traversière-Saint-Antoine, Mathieu Criaerd is renowned for his collaboration with the marchand-mercier Thomas-Joachim Hébert during the 1740s on numerous pieces of furniture featuring lacquer panels and vernis Martin finishes. Notable examples include the commode and corner cabinet delivered to the Comtesse de Mailly for the Blue Room at the Château de Choisy, now in the Louvre museum (inv. OA 11292 and OA 9533).
Among the masterpieces of the Mobilier in vernis Martin, the commode and pair of encoignures from the collection Hottinguer, sold by Christie's Paris, 2-3 December 2003, lots 187 and 190, Collection Jean-Marie Rossi, d'un monde à l'autre, Sotheby's Paris, 10 March 2026, lot 7. We recognize in both lots a strong inspiration for Japanese-influenced lacquers, here with its particularly shaped cartouches and the emphasis on floral designs.
