Jean-Mathieu Chevallier, cabinetmaker, recevied master in 1743.
He established his workshop on the Rue de Grenelle under the sign of “La Croix Chevallier” and contributed to the furnishing of the Hôtel du Duc de Talmont as well as the Château de Villegénis, owned by Louise-Anne de Bourbon-Condé (Kjellberg, p. 177). The Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris notably preserves a small Louis XV secrétaire veneered in amaranth and satinwood. While a number of commodes bearing Chevallier’s stamp are recorded today, examples preserved as pairs are encountered far less frequently.
