in the form of a Chinese Pavilion flanked by acanthus scrolls above a pierced C-scroll and acanthus cartouche issuing two stylised tree branches terminating in gilt brass leaf nozzles and drip pans; plates resilvered; one bearing a printed label on the back Lord Walsingham below an armorial

The Barons Walsingham, possibly Sir William de Grey, 1st Baron (1719-1781), thence by descent;

Sotheby’s New York, 16 October 1987, lot 32.

William de Grey was the third son of Thomas de Grey (1680-1765) of Merton, Norfolk who served as an MP between 1708 and 1727. He was himself an MP from 1761-1771 and held office as Solicitor-General and Attorney-General for the government between 1763 and 1771, before being appointed Lord Chief Justice of the Common Pleas. He was knighted in 1766 and raised to the peerage as Baron Walsingham upon his retirement in 1780. The line continues to this day with John de Grey, 9th Baron (b. 1925).
