8vo (208 x 128 mm), folding plate of a triple chess board, contemporary straight-grained crimson morocco, covers elaborately gilt and in centre of each cover "N" stamped in gilt, surmounted with a ducal coronet, gilt edges, blue silk endpapers, extremities slightly rubbed


Rare English translation of Marinelli's Il Giuco degli Scacchi fratre (1722), dedicated to the Duchess of Northumberland, in a handsome contemporary binding. This work is believed to the the first in a long line of chess variants for three players.
