Lot Details
Description
rectangular, the lid carved with a small Roman temple next to a dog drinking from a fountain and a sheep to the left, the agate panels forming the sides also carved with pastoral and architectural fantasies, the base representing a dramatic rockery below a bird flying towards a honey-coloured sunset, the mounts and slightly raised thumbpiece chased with flowers and leafy foliage, apparently unmarked apart from French charançon import mark 1838-186,
7,2 cm; 2 ¾ in. wide
overall weight 110gr, 3,54 oz.
The differently coloured layers of the agate have been skillfully used by the lapidary to define the silhouettes and form of the composition. The level of ingenuity is such that might be associated with the work of the Dresden carver Johann Georg Klett (1720-1793) who was appointed Hofsteinschneider (court lapidary) to the Court of the Elector of Saxony in 1755.
