Description
oval, all sides painted en plein with ‘chinoiserie’ scenes en grisaille against a raspberry-coloured enamel ground, framed by chased borders of ovolos, entrelac and rocailles flanked by flower sprays en trois couleurs on a sablé ground, the sides further decorated with dividers formed of columns hung with laurel swags, the later base with enamels painted by a different hand, maker’s mark, charge discharge mark of Jean-Jacques Prévost (1762-1768), Paris date letter for 1762,

Another gold box with the same subject painted en grisaille, although against a salmon-coloured enamel background, was made by Noël Hardivilliers, 1753/1754, and belongs to the collection of the Musée du Louvre (OA 7985, see S. Grandjean, Les tabatières du Musée du Louvre, Paris, 1981, p. 114, no. 125).
