shaped oblong, with moulded borders and each on four cast scroll supports, all four hinged lids engraved with a coat-of-arms and crest within a floral festoon, scrolling foliate and architectural cartouche above the motto 'VESTIGIA NULLA RETRORSUM’, later gilt interiors, fully marked

The arms are those of Hampden of Great Hampden, near

Wendover, Buckinghamshire for John Hampden (1695?-1754), 24th hereditary Lord of Great Hampden and M.P. for Wendover from 1734 until his death. Hampden, 'who died very rich', was taken ill at dinner at the Earl of Buckingham's house in the Palace of Whitehall where he was put to bed and died shortly after on 4th February 1754. (The Derby Mirror, Derby, 1-8th and 8-15th February 1754). He was unmarried at the time of his death, bequeathing his estates and name to his kinsman, Robert Trevor (1706-1783), afterwards Hampden, created Viscount Hampden in 1776.
