8vo (200 x 121 mm). Woodcut headpiece, 2 folded engraved plates of chemical apparatus tipped in at end; occasional spotting, some very light browning. Early or near-contemporary brown mottled half calf, spine with raised bands in six compartments, second gilt-lettered, sixth with gilt ornament, edges speckled blue; wear to lowest compartment on spine, worming to lower inner corner of upper cover, corners bumped slightly.

First and only German edition. 

Achard’s treatise was the earliest devoted to scientific chemical analysis of gemstones, especially those containing alumina and silica.
