monogrammed at centre, on the pages of the book: NMF; indistinctly inscribed and dated at centre, on the cover of the book: [...] KEN / VAN / 167 […]

oil on canvas

unframed: 89.4 x 119 cm.; 35¼ x 46⅞ in.

framed: 105.8 x 135.5 cm.; 41⅝ x 53⅜ in.

Anonymous sale ('Property from a Private Collection, West Coast'), New York, Sotheby's, 22 May 2019, lot 29, for $68,750;

Where acquired by the present owner.

An alternative attribution to François van Aken (act. Antwerp 1667–after 1714) has been suggested on account of the inscription on the cover of the book at centre. The same inscription is found on another version of this composition, of inferior quality, offered in these rooms in 2011.1 It appears more likely, however, that the KEN previously read REKEN (reckoning): a common inscription on vanitas still lifes.
