This drawing was first published in the Ratjen Collection exhibition catalogue in 1977, as a study by Pompeo Girolamo Batoni (1708-1787). The attribution to Bottani was confirmed in the 1980s by Edgar Peters Bowron and Stefano Susino, when the sheet was still in the Ratjen collection.1
