Following an apprenticeship with his father Pietro Ligari (1686-1752), Cesare Ligari went to study in Venice with Giambattista Pittoni (1687-1767) and most probably also with Giovanni Battista Piazzetta (1682-1754). Stylistically, the present drawing can be associated with a number of sheets in the Museo Valtellinese di Storia e d'Arte in Sondrio.1
