Description

The shaped-triangular base on three foliate feet and engraved with a coat-of-arms, a monogram and a presentation inscription, the vine leaf-clad stem surrounded by three putti representing the arts and leading to the central basket supporting a cut-glass bowl and the six branches with removable drip-pans, on a mirrored plateau with foaming wave border,

The presentation inscription reads: 'Presented to Sir Curtis Miranda Lampson, Baronet, by the Corporation of the Royal Exchange and the London Assurance and the London Indemnity and Prime Assurance Companies in acknowledgment at his able and gratuitous services in realizing for their benefit the property saved from the wreck of the Nicolaus I, April 1869'.


The arms and monogram are those of Sir Curtis Lampson, 1st Baronet (1806-1885) who was born in Vermont, Massachusetts where he gained his first job as a clerk. He moved to England in 1830 and became a naturalised subject in 1848. He was a director of the Atlantic Telegraph Company which succeeded in laying a cable between America and England in 1866 whereupon Lampson was created a baronet for his efforts. He lived at Rowfant House, a Tudor mansion in West Sussex.
