the silvered dial engraved with flowers and signed Payne & Co, 163 New Bond St, the fusee and chain movement with ratchet-tooth lever escapement, the plain steel three arm balance mounted on the backplate, the rectangular case applied with boldly cast and chased foliage on an engraved ground, the sides inset with panels of lapis lazuli, the rear shutter engraved with an Alpine landscape,

William Payne established his watch and clocking business in South Molton Street, London in 1816. By 1852 Payne & Co was operating from 163 New Bond Street and is known to have retailed the work of the famous maker, Thomas Cole.
