Description

With six beaded foliate straps rising to an orb finial, the base band chased with "jewels" and engraved with Hebrew inscription, marked on base band, with probably later cross piece at base pierced for Torah staves

The inscription reads, Remembrance before God, dedicated by Chatan Torah, the honorable Rabbi Daniel Abensur.


Daniel Abensur was a distinguished member of the local Sephardic Jewish community of Hamburg. He was the younger son of a Marrano burnt at the stake in Lisbon in 1609, and the Polish king’s ambassador in Hamburg.
