Description

each panel centered by a gilt filigree roundel with mirror cypher, flanked by gilt rosettes, in a framework of white silver filigree flowers and foliage with faceted red pastes, the spine with four panels of rosettes, similar clasps, apparently unmarked, losses and repairs, fitted with a miniature Mishna printed in Amsterdam, 1713, at the House of Solomon Proops, lacking title and first three folios.

Mirror cyphers such as the ones on this binding were popular in Holland and England in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, as can be seen in Jeremiah Marlow's A Book of Cyphers or Letters Reverst, London, 1683, and Samuel Sympson's New Book of Cyphers, London, circa 1716.
