The arms on the leather case are those of Ascarelli, of Rome. The name comes from Hebrew meaning "strong as a lion." The Ascarelli were known as merchants, men of law, and doctors. Joshua Ascarelli, rabbi of Rome, was imprisoned with his young children in 1605. and the children forcibly converted and taken from him.
