Description

Formed from two large shell casings; circular, the body with shaped panels of inlaid basketweave, the cover with inlaid script Hebrew inscription against chased ground, acorn-shaped finial


height 5 5/8 in.; diameter 6 3/4 in.

The inscriptions read, "And the redeemed of the LORD shall return and come to Zion with singing" (Isaiah 51:11) with date "Lag Ba-Omer, 1913."


Avraham Asher Bar Adon or Baradon (1885-1949) was born in Jerusalem and entered the Bezalel School in 1906, becoming a member of the first graduating class. From 1909 he was a professor at the school and worked in the carpet department, and The Israel Museum website notes that same year "he was appointed head of the copper department ("Damascus Works") established at Bezalel" and that he "created a group of works made of munitions shells." https://museum.imj.org.il/artcenter/newsite/en/?artist=Baradon%2C+Avraham
