The first Aldine edition of the expanded Sallustian corpus, including spurious and rhetorical texts, based on two manuscripts procured by Fra Gocondo in Paris for Janus Lascaris, and dedicated to Bartolomeo d'Alviani. Reprinted from the Florence 1503 edition (see lot 1384) is the vita Salustii by Pietro Crinito.
8vo (160 x 95 mm). Italic type, 30 lines. collation: a-s8 t4: 148 leaves. Woodcut Aldine device to title-page and verso of last leaf, guide letters in initial spaces. (Tear to lower corner of h2 affecting three letters of text, marginal tear to lower corner of p8, areas of dampstaining, particularly at beginning and end.)
binding: Contemporary Venetian russet morocco over thin wooden boards (167 x 99 mm), blind floral border with gilt leaf at corners, large gilt arabesque in center, three bands, blind crosshatching in compartments, traces of four metal clasps, blue edges. (Spine damaged at head and tail, with some loss extending onto upper cover, corners worn with some exposure, small patch of worming to lower pasteboard.)
