Description
Philostratus, Flavius. Phylostratus Apollonii Tyanei scriptor luculentus a Philippo Beroaldo castigatus. [Lyon: Guillaume Huyon and/or/for Baldazare de Gabiano?, 1504–1505?]
A second copy of this puzzling Aldine-counterfeit-adjacent publication, in an attractive panel-stamped binding.
8vo (157 x 96 mm). Italic type, 29 lines plus headline. collation: π4 a–z8 A–B8 C6: 209 (of 210) leaves (lacking terminal blank C6). Three-, six-, and seven-line initial spaces with guide letters. (Several leaves repaired at lower fore-edge corner and margin, d2 most significantly, but none affecting text, scattered marginal dampstaining and soiling.)
binding: Early sixteenth-century French or Flemish panel-stamped brown calf (162 x 104 mm), covers with central panel stamp of St. Peter holding a key and a book, within an arch and landscape with stars, surmounting a blind cipher at foot (binder's device?) supported by eagles, the whole enclosed by a triple blind-rule border, a diaper-patterned outer frame with fleurons within, and triple blind rules at head and foot, spine blind-tooled in four compartments, later maroon morocco label in second, plain endpapers, edges gilt and gauffered to a floral design, remnants of four pairs of silk ties. (Rebacked, some restoration to extremities, some small stains to rear cover.)
provenance: "Johannes Jolivet," sixteenth-century inscription on title-page (possibly the cartographer Jean Jolivet [d. 1553]) — "Andreas Chippard 1620," inscription on title-page (possibly André Chippard, Avocat au Parlement de Paris) — "JC Gaupentine," inscription on title-page — several unidentified seventeenth-/eighteenth-century ownership inscriptions on title-page and rear pastedown: "Virtus in infirmitate perfuncta"; "Soins et paix"; "Omnia virtutis debere"; "DSC" "Lex Immacolata convertens animas, testimonium domini fidele sapientiam presentans parvulis" (Psalm 18:8). acquisition: Purchased from Sokol Books Ltd., London, 2016. references: UCLA 1124; Aldo Manuzio tipografo 134.13; Baudrier, VII:15; FB 82834; Renouard 307/16; Shaw 17; USTC 143138
