FIRST EDITION of the first historical essay on the royal library which later became the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
This copy belonged to Jean-Baptiste Caqué (1720-1787), chief surgeon of the Hôtel-Dieu de Reims and lieutenant to the First Surgeon of the King. He is renowned for his work in military hospitals, as well as his invention of a number of important surgical implements.
12mo (140 x 80 mm). Roman type, 36 lines plus headline. collation: a12 A-O12 P4 (final verso blank): 184 leaves. Woodcut head- and tailpieces. (Some very minor spotting to a few leaves.)
binding: Contemporary French calf (146 x 86 mm), gold-tooled spine with 6 compartments, red title-piece is second compartment, acorn tool in other compartments, edges marbled, marbled endpapers. (Binding rubbed at extremities, lower cover corners defective, circular dampstain to upper cover, joints cracked, 2 upper endpapers detached.)
