A RARE VOLUME OF LEFÈVRE D'ÉTAPLES' COMMENTARIES ON ARISTOTLE. The present volume is notable for the way in which its edges are stained to mark the divisions of the text: red (Physicorum); black (Coelo et mundo); green (De anima. De sensu et sensato. De sommo et vigilia. De longitudine); red (Dialogo in super ad physicorum. Introductio metaphysica).
8vo (160 x 106 mm). Gothic type, 39 lines plus headline. collation: a-z8 &8 ς8 A-R8: 336 leaves. Woodcut initials and diagrams, occasional early modern marginalia. (Some marginal worming to start of textblock.)
binding: Brown Italian morocco over pasteboards (167 x 112 mm), 2 blind fillets, at head of upper cover "ARISTOTELES", inner rectangular frame containing repeated knotwork tool, inner compartment with leafy branch at corners, in centre a stirrup tool tête-bêche, traces of 4 pairs of fabric ties, spine with 3 full bands, saltire in compartments, tooled in a low-grade gold (much oxidised). (Extremities rubbed.)
