FIRST EDITION of an important text on religious institutions composed during the Spanish Inquisition, IN A FINE SPANISH BINDING; EL ESCORIAL DUPLICATE WITH CHARACTERISTIC BLIND-STAMP.
A copy of this text remains in the library (shelfmark 25-V-68 (2°) "Enc" "Esc"), suggesting that this was sold as a duplicate; a removed upper endleaf may have featured the shelfmark of the present copy.

4to (215 x 162 mm). Roman type, 39 lines plus headline. collation: *8 a6 A-Y8 Z4 (final verso blank): 194 leaves. Woodcut arms of Phillip II on title-page, woodcut initials, manuscript corrections to text, a few untrimmed edges. (Some slight browning towards margins.)
binding: Spanish black morocco (232 x 175 mm), gilt, three concentric rectangles outlined by a fish scale tool, small castle and lion stamps at corners, large gilt arabesque design at centre with same castle and lion stamps, small stars between frames, blind stamp of El Escorial on both covers, spine with 4 full bands, remains of paper label pasted to spine, author's name lettered down fore-edge, case number "4" at head of fore-edge, edges gilt, stubs from 2 pairs of ties. (Binding slightly rubbed at extremities, joints cracking, small wormhole to upper outer corner of lower board, one upper endleaf removed.)
