With a career spanning over seventy years, Fred Machetanz produced some of the most sought-after depictions of Alaskan culture and wildlife. Machetanz built a strong educational foundation, receiving a B.A. and M.A. from Ohio State University then studying at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. His uncle invited Machetanz to visit Alaska, and the state fascinated him so much it became his main subject. Machetanz wrote and illustrated children’s books Panuck, Eskimo Sled Dog (1939) and On Arctic Ice (1940) for Scribner's. He was named Alaskan of the Year in 1977 and American Artist Magazine’s American Artist of the Year in 1981.
