First edition.
Known for his work as a political activist, Bertrand published over 70 books and countless articles over his lifetime. The present work represents an extension of Italian mathematician Guiseppe Peano’s and Gottlob Frege’s works, of whom Bertrand first came into contact with during the 1900 Mathematical Congress in Paris.
He would later be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in Literature in 1950 "in recognition of his varied and significant writings in which he champions humanitarian ideals and freedom of thought", for his major work A History of Western Philosophy.
Large 8vo (245 x 165 mm). Half title; some leaves unopened, a few tears. Original blue cloth boards, Royal Engineers Library gilt supra-libros on front cover and stamp on title; rubbed, wear at hinge, edges dust-soiled.
