Description
Laplace, Pierre-Simon
Exposition du système du monde. Paris: Cercle-Social, An IV [1796]
Rare first edition of Laplace's magnum opus, containing the first statement of the "nebular hypothesis" of the solar system (known as the Kant-Laplace theory).
This comprehensive work was written for educational purposes, covering the extent of contemporary astronomical knowledge at the time in clear language, without the use of mathematics. In it, Laplace presents his speculative theory of the origins of the universe, which he believes was formed by a large incandescent nebula of which the sun was merely a relic.
The Dictionary of Scientific Biography deems it one of the most successful popularizations of science ever composed.
The work is also notable as it introduced the concept now known as black holes. On page 305 of the second volume, Laplace posits "que les plus grands corps lumineux de l'univers soient invisibles." However, it seems that this audacious claim was too counterintuitive, as it was removed from the editions after the 1799 printing.
Two volumes, 8vo (195 x 123 mm). Half-title to each volume; instances of dampstaining and light browning, scattered foxing. Contemporary tree calf, covers with gilt borders, smooth spines with gilt lettering pieces and repeat device in gilt, marbled endpapers; rubbing to extremities with some minor restoration, restoration to spines, joints weak.
