Naples, Palazzo Reale, Fontainebleau e la maniera italiana, 26 July – 12 October 1952, no. 48 (lent by Neger).

This composition, known through a wide number of versions, was evidently a popular image. Similar version include that by Maarten de Vos in the State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg,1 and another, attributed to Jacob de Backer and his workshop, at the Kunstpalast, Dusseldorf.2 Given these similarities, it is likely that the present panel is the work of a Flemish artist working at Fontainebleau.
