In the collection of the family of the present owner since 1950.
This work is a replica after a painting by Jusepe de Ribera dating to circa 1630 in a private collection.1 Variants after Ribera's original include a canvas attributed to his workshop sold at Sotheby's, New York, in 2015,2 and another, considered by Nicola Spinosa to be a high quality replica, in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Narbonne.3
