oil on oak panel, possibly cut down on the right

We are grateful to Fred Meijer for endorsing the attribution to Molenaer and for dating the picture to the first half of the 1640s.
Charles Brinsley Marlay, the owner of this painting until his death in 1912, was an Anglo-Irish landowner and art collector. He made a major bequeath to the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, including his extensive collection of illuminated manuscripts.
