A musical gathering in an interior

 

bears signature centre left, on the book on the stool: Jmuelenaer

oil on oak panel, possibly cut down on the right

unframed: 37 x 40.9 cm.; 14⅝ x 16⅛ in.

framed: 64.7 x 66.8 cm.; 25½ x 26¼ in.

Charles Brinsley Marlay (1831–1912), St Katherine's Lodge, Regent's Park;

By whom bequeathed with the rest of his collection to the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, 1912;

By whom deaccessioned and sold, London, Sotheby's, 7 May 1952, lot 134 (as D. Hals), for £75, to Wengraf.

Charles Brinsley Marlay, the owner of this painting until his death in 1912, was an Anglo-Irish landowner and art collector. He made a major bequeath to the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, including his extensive collection of illuminated manuscripts.
