Wooded River Landscape with Farmhouses, Figures, and Livestock

Probably painted in Antwerp during the late 1620s, this lively riverside scene by Jan Brueghel the Younger is based on a signed prototype (on copper) by his father, Jan Brueghel the Elder, today in the Bavarian State Painting Collections (Staatsgalerie Neuburg, inv. 2808). Executed soon after he assumed control of his father’s studio in 1625, this work reflects Jan Brueghel the Younger’s close adherence to the Elder’s manner, particularly evident here in the precision of each brushstroke and delight in anecdotal detail.
