Jan Brueghel the Younger
Antwerp 1601 - 1678
Wooded River Landscape with Farmhouses, Figures, and Livestock

panel: 9 ⅜ by 14 ⅜ in.; 23.8 by 36.5 cm
framed: 15 ¼ by 20 ½ in.; 38.7 by 52.1 cm
Probably painted in Antwerp during the late 1620s, this lively riverside scene by Jan Brueghel the Younger is based on a signed prototype (on copper) by his father, Jan Brueghel the Elder, today in the Bavarian State Painting Collections (Staatsgalerie Neuburg, inv. 2808). Executed soon after he assumed control of his father’s studio in 1625, this work reflects Jan Brueghel the Younger’s close adherence to the Elder’s manner, particularly evident here in the precision of each brushstroke and delight in anecdotal detail.
The photocopy of a certificate by Klaus Ertz, dated 26 August 2022, who confirmed the attribution based on first-hand examination, is available upon request.
