Saint John the Evangelist with the Crucifixion

oil on panel, gold ground, in an engaged frame

panel: 58 by 24 ⅜ in.; 147.3 by 61.9 cm

painted surface: 46 ½ by 22 in.; 118.1 by 55.9 cm

With Galeria Bernat, Madrid;

From whom acquired by the present collector, 2021.

This devotional image of Saint John the Evangelist is iconographically unusual, as relatively few works combine a monumental standing saint with a subsidiary Calvary scene. The panel is hierarchically structured: the Calvary appears above within a gently undulating landscape, while below Saint John is shown full-length before an architectural and ornamental backdrop. The youthful, elongated figure of Saint John together with the extensive use of gold ground with stylized foliate motifs, points to a painter active in the Valencian school in the first half of the fifteenth century.

We are grateful to Dr. Antoni José i Pitarch, who endorsed the authentication of this painting based on photographs.
