The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, attributed to the Master of Santiago, exemplifies late fifteenth-century Iberian panel painting. The saint is shown bound to a tree and pierced by arrows, his idealized, restrained figure set against the animated executioners who occupy the foreground. Their varied stances, emphatic gestures, and brightly colored dress intensify the narrative focus. Together, these elements underscore the panel’s position at the intersection of late Gothic tradition and an emerging pictorial naturalism.
