Pair of Roundels

tin-glazed earthenware (maiolica), in later giltwood frames

diameters of roundels: 10 and 10 ⅛ in.; 25.4 and 25.7 cm

diameters with giltwood frames: 14 ¾ in.; 37.5 cm

The present roundels are decorated with scenes of classical maidens attended by putti. One maiden is depicted gazing into a mirror, a motif that may allude to Venus, the Roman goddess of love, beauty, and fertility.

Probably Workshop of Francesco Durantino (active 16th century), Italian, Urbino, circa 1540-60
