Description

Claude Saint-Paul, called Claude Simpol

(Clamecy circa 1666 - 1716 Paris)

The Baptism of Christ

Oiled black chalk and gray wash, extensively heightened with white, on paper partly washed brown, the landscape in pen and brown ink

253 by 175 mm; 10 by 6⅞ in.

We are grateful to François Marandet for pointing out that although it has long been thought that Simpol died in 1716, Hélène Denis was already referred to as his widow in January 1711, so that the artist must have died no later than 1710.
