each decorated in the center with the arms and inscribed Morgan, made for Elias Morgan of Hartford of Connecticut, comprising:
A square salad bowl, width 9 in.; 23 cm
A pair of large oval platters, length 15 1/4 in.; 28.3 cm
A pair of oval platters, length 14 1/8 in.; 35.8 cm
A small oval platter, length 10 5/8 in.; 27.1 cm
Seven circular dinner plates, diameter 9 7/8 in.; 25 cm
Twenty-six circular side plates, diameter 7 1/2 in.; 19 cm
together with a group of porcelains decorated with similar borders and center left undecorated, comprising:
A pair of large vegetable dishes and covers, length 11 in.; 28 cm

The present pieces originate from one of two services made for the merchant brothers Elias and John Morgan of Hartford, Connecticut. As noted in David S. Howard's The Choice of the Private Trader (p. 102), the service ordered by John Morgan and delivered aboard the Empress of China bore the Morgan family inscription, while a second service, returned on the subsequent voyage, bore Elias Morgan's full name of which an example resides in the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, object number 48.172.3. These services rank among the earliest American special commissions produced following the opening of direct trade with China.
