with a later mirror plate; the moulded rectangular frame with arabesque scroll and bird borders and a pierced strapwork crest centered by a winged cherub mask

Born in Colmar, the goldsmith and enameller David Altenstetter (1547-1617) became a master in the guild of Augsburg goldsmiths in 1573 and served as its warden from 1587-1595. His thriving workshop supplied numerous illustrious clients including Philipp Hainhofer and the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolph II. He was particularly renowned for his mastery of the technique of basse taille enamel decoration set in silver and pewter grounds based on arabesque and strapwork designs by contemporary ornamental artists such as Daniel Mignot and Corvinianus Saur,
