Description

the frieze applied with some draperies, opening with one drawer with a sliding tray, the feet joined by a stretcher, with a later pietra dura marble top decorated with flower bouquet, on castors

Haut. 77 cm, larg. 43 cm, prof. 33,5 cm ; Height. 30 ¼ in, width. 17 ¼ in, depth 13 ¼ in.

Martin Carlin, cabinetmaker, received master in 1766.

This exquisite table, with its delicate proportions and finely chased gilt-bronze mounts, belongs to a group of similar tables with variations, many of which are stamped by the cabinetmaker Martin Carlin.

They are recognizable by their distinctive gilt-bronze mounts, particularly the ornament on the stretcher decorated with flowers and fruit, similar to those found on the lacquered table in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Inv. 1976.155.103). Similar lion's paw feet are also found on the table in the same museum (inv. 1986.38.2) and on the table from the collection of the Hôtel Lambert, sold by Sotheby's on October 13, 2022, lot 716. Finally, this same frieze of drapery garlands and rim appears on several tables, notably two work tables in the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv. 1058-1882 and 1067-1882).
