Description
modelled by P. Reinicke and possibly J. J. Kändler, with a trunk and bundle strapped to his back, holding an unfurled map of Corsica in his right hand, upon a small mound base applied with leaves and flowers, crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue to rear of base
Height 6 ⅜ in; 16 cm
This figure is from the first series of Parisian street-traders. It was based on the first page of the third edition of Études prises dans le bas Peuple ou les Cris de Paris, published in 1738, from an engraving "Marchand d'Images", by Anne Claude Philippe de Tubières, the Comte de Caylus after Edmé Bouchardon.
In October 1744, the figure is mentioned in Reinicke's work records as: '1 Tyroler, einen Tabulet-Kasten tragend mit Bildern in der Hand, 9 Zoll hoch, in Thon bossiret', [a Tyrolean street vendor carrying a display box, with pictures in hand, 9 inches high, modelled in clay]. ]. Kändler corrected the figure the same month: ‘Einen Tyroler Welcher allerley Waaren zu verkauffen träget, Corrigiret und in tüchtigen Stand gesetzet, zum Laager gehörig’ [a Tyrolean who carries all kinds of goods for sale, corrected and brought to fit state, for the storehouse] (Sarah-Katharina Andres-Acevedo, Die autonomen figürlichen Plastiken Johann Joachim Kaendlers und seiner Werkstatt zwischen 1731 und 1748, Band II, Stuttgart, 2023, p. 188, cat. no. 514).
