John L. Severance, Longwood, Cleveland, 1942 ;

Christie’s New York, 30 November 2012, lot 63

The characteristic landscape cartouche adorning this coiffeuse shows strong similarities with those found on works by Pierre Roussel and Léonard Boudin, some of which also feature a lattice-pattern marquetry apron. However, such landscape panels may also have been produced by specialist marquetry makers and subsequently supplied to cabinetmakers for incorporation into their furniture.

Among comparable pieces, one may notably mention a table by Léonard Boudin sold in the collection of The Trustees of the Late 3rd Viscount Allendale at Christie’s London, on 7 July 2005, lot 315.
