Benedikt Holl (1755-1833), a cabinetmaker originally from Württemberg, settled in Vienna in 1791. His reputation as a talented cabinetmaker stems from his small but technically exceptional works from the Imperial and Biedermeier period, often based on English designs. In the collections of the Prince of Liechtenstein, there is a charming lady's writing desk signed Holl (inv. MO 2307) exhibiting the same characteristics as our writing table, notably its unusual stretcher and illustrated in Splendeurs des Collections du Prince de Liechtenstein, Palais Lumière, Evian, 2011, p.192 et 193.
