Pierre Roussel, cabinetmaker, became a master in 1745.

Pierre Roussel is renowned for his exceptionally high-quality floral marquetry, which can be admired on our secrétaire, particularly the exquisitely detailed bouquets with traces of colour. He created commissions for Palais Bourbon as well as for the Prince of Condé at the Château de Chantilly.

A similar secrétaire à abattant with a large marquetry landscape is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (inv. 58.75.53). Its sides are adorned with large bouquets of flowers, as seen on the doors of the present lot. Another example with architectural marquetry was sold at Christie's London on 4th December 2014, lot 65, and a third was sold at Christie's London on 23rd June 1999, lot 20.
