Description
of oval form moulded in high relief with rocailles and a lambrequin border with oval bosses, raised on four scroll feet picked out in pale blue and stippled shades of yellow, finely painted, probably by Ignaz Hess, with branches of flowers, the cover with similar branches included thorny rose branches, surmounted with a curling scroll finial, wheel mark over letter D and initials i:H:, probably for Johann Ignaz Hess, in yellow

An example of this elaborate form, which probably follows a silver prototype, is illustrated by Patricia Stahl, Höchster Porzellan 1746-1796, Katalog zur Ausstellung Höchster Porzellan, Heidelberg, 1994, p. 50, cat. no. 3.2.19, where other examples in museum collections are cited. The author notes that it was one of the manufactory’s most successful and popular designs and that it was made in three sizes from the summer of 1748. By 1750, the form was being imitated by other European fayence manufactories, including Strasbourg and Crailsheim and at Delft. The i:H: monogram mark is attributed to the factory painter Johann Ignaz Hess.
