Description
Marchesinus, Johannes
Mammotrectus super Bibliam. Milan: Leonardus Pachel and Uldericus Scinzenzeler, 29 August 1481
4to (198 x 140 mm). Gothic letter, text in two columns, 37 lines plus headline, initial spaces, many filled with red and blue, first half rubricated. Collation: a–z8 aa–hh8 ii6 A10 B8 b8: 304 leaves. Some scattered staining, final leaf worn, wormed, and restored. Nineteenth-century brown morocco over earlier beech boards; worn and restored, clasps lost.
An uncommon edition of Marchesinus's influential exegesis of the Bible, intended for Franciscan clerics, first printed by Peter Schöffer in Mainz in 1470. Rare Book Hub records no copies of the Pachel and Scinzenzeler edition—the tenth of twenty-three fifteenth-century editions—apart from an incomplete copy sold in 1972.
